South Central Houston
South Central Houston is a neighborhood located in the south-central region of Houston. It is among the oldest communities in Houston and has a population of over 17,000 people. History
South Central Houston has a history of being an area of racial and economic segregation. In the 1950s, it was one of many neighborhoods in Houston that were designated as "Negro” or "Colored" districts. The Texas State Legislature passed the 1956 Restrictive Covenants Act, which made it illegal for African Americans to purchase property outside these designated areas. This legislation lasted until 1965, when it was overturned by the Supreme Court in Jones v Mayer.
